Simple ipod touch 4th gener. Q for any Super Smart Techs. out?

just bought ipod touch4th generation- i connect/ turn on and usb cord arrows to itunes logo. and i have connected my ipod to computer, doesnt work, hold it for 10 sec. dnt work, turn off/on, i already downloaded itunes like last year (literally,lol) do i need to download new itunes version, which one is it my laptop is a vaio sony, some **** like that ? oh and when i connect it to itunes you know normally the little ipod usually pops up on the left side, well that doesnt show up, please help me, i really need my ipod to work! thanks!
